As I have experience drinking in most of Portishead's pubs I consider The Royal Oak to be one of the friendliest pubs to enter. The management wish for nothing but to offer good service and entertainment to the folks who pop in for a drink or a bite to eat. If you wish to sit in solitude in a pub or are easily offended by men with dirty clothes and a tendency to repeat profanity then maybe the Royal Oak is not for you and a little trot down to the Windmill might suit you better (although it has good beer and good views the atmosphere portrays purgatory on Earth). The Oak, in its reason for being there, is a very social public house that really does offer a place for the people of the community to enjoy a drink, a sing-song on karaoke night or a discussion with one of the regulars. If you go in there with a pretense that your poop doesn't smell and a silly idea that those who frequent it are idiotic numbskulls then, just like anywhere else where people have pride, you might get yourself a bop on the hooter. Just as silly is buying a house very close to a lively pub that people love so much they stay right to the end of the night because they're having bags of fun. Just what the Windmill could do with really - some fun.

I have the misfortune and displeasure of living near The Royal Oak in West Hill. Where do we start with this nefarious establishment? It regularly encourages after hours drinking and makes no attempts to keep the noise from it's customers down at all hours; the landlord shows no interest in the local community, it offers nothing for families, it's a violent and not attractive place. It appears the only thing that keeps this hole open is that it doesn't turn away the lowest class of customer. As long as it's tills ring to idiotic numbskull's who frequent it, I guess it will stay open. Most people wanting a beer in that area walk down to the Windmill at least that way there's no fear of being sworn at, watch underage drinking, have to avoid fights (oh yes, the police have been called out here many times)
Dreadful. This place must shut, and soon. Either that or give it to somebody who cares and respects for the local community.
