TRADITIONAL jazz is alive and well and flourishing in Portishead.

Despite suffering a slight recession of its own, Dixieland is refusing to roll over and disappear as a new club opening in Portishead proves.

The Bristol-based Muskrats Jazz Band performs on the first Thursday of each month at Clarence House in the High Street. The six-piece combo, comprising trumpet, clarinet, trombone, keyboard, bass and drums, includes three retired dentists, two teachers and an engineer.

Leader on keyboard Charles Baete said: “This is the first time jazz has been played in Portishead on a regular basis and the response since we opened in June has been very encouraging.”

The next session is on August 5, starting at 8.30pm and admission is just £3 on the door. Charles can be contacted on 01275 814434.
