Beyond the Wall Competition
Marking 20 years since the end of division between East and West Germany, Bristol’s Chamber choir ‘Exultate Singers’ gave a concert in Clifton Cathedral on November 8th including music from Estonia, Poland, and the Czech Republic, all with links to this momentous anniversary. Alongside this event, the choir organised a creative writing competition for Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 for schools in the area. A number of our students were shortlisted:
Rachel Hinchcliffe
Danielle Hodges
Suzanna King
Emma Hopkins
Livi Pointon
Fern Warner Clark
Rebecca Wilson
Holly Smith
Hannah Francis
All the students are to be congratulated and we are delighted to announce that the winner of the Key Stage 3 competition was Holly Smith who won a cheque for £50. The runner up was Hannah Francis.
Their success is impressive considering the judge for the competition was the author and journalist Peter Millar who was named Foreign Correspondent of the Year 1989 for his coverage of the Cold War culminating in the fall of the Berlin Wall. He spoke at the event about his experiences in East Berlin and selected the winners after reading the shortlisted entries.
