Town's volunteers to be celebrated

A SPECIAL civic event is to be held in Portishead next year to celebrate the work of volunteers.
The function is being organised by Portishead Town Council chairman, Councillor Reyna Knight.
Mrs Knight, who took over the reins from 2009-10 chairman, David Pasley, has been a town and North Somerset councillor for three years.
Mrs Knight, 73, has three main aims during her year as chairman, one of which is to recognise the hard work of the organisations and individuals in the town.
Mrs Knight said: "There is so much good work that goes on behind the scenes in Portishead.
"All these groups and people give hours of their time to make Portishead the town it is today.
"I want to see this hard work recognised, and I am planning to hold a special civic event to say thank you to these unsung heroes and recognise the contribution they make."
Mrs Knight also plans to organise a community showcase where local groups can get together to display the activities on offer in the town and wants to ask students from schools across Portishead to design a special Christmas card for the town. She said: "Portishead is a great town to live in and I am excited about representing it as its council chairman."

Yes, Portishead is a great town to live in. although I'm sure some peoples thoughts are that you would have been ecstatic, if instead, you were representing it as its town mayor.

ReportDo you all think these people do it for public humiliation, stand here recieve this, look at the camera. I am sure all of these people do it because they can and they are passionate about what they do. If the council has money spare to put on a function for these people, then i hope to see them using some of the money they have in better ways.
What a daft idea.

ReportThere are a lot of hard working community groups and individuals in the town. It does show that you do not necessarily need to be a local Counsellor in order to make a difference, you just need to care about whats going on and do something about it. I'm sure that many of these people work away trying to make things better (while Mrs Knight worries about whether the school children in the town are confused by her title and whether she should be called town mayor.)
That aside I would say ...
- Portishead in Bloom - am amazing job and really make efforts to make this town look nice.
- Annette Hennessy (sorry if misspelt) - puts in a massive amount of effort for what she believes to be right in the town which many people benefit from.
- The Pool - specifically the people who helped last year and who go and spend money supporting this excellent facility
- Tracy Fowler - cares and supports about this town and reports on as much as she can in the local paper.
- Portishead Skatepark project - an excellent effort showing the positive contribution from the overlooked youth of this town despite lack of support from the Town Council.
- Christmas Lights - are excellent and must take a massive amount of work.
- As does the Carnival organisation.
I think these people make a difference and with the best will are trying to make Portishead a nicer place to be.

ReportI think this is a great idea. A lot of people and organisations in Portishead give hours of their time to make events such as the carnival, Christmas lights and the pool happen.
What does everyone else think? And who should get such an award?
