Portishead needs a post office in the High Street

IN your Tuesday edition there was an article regarding Portishead Post Office. This should have been dealt with years ago when it was known what residential/commercial development there would be.

It is a disgrace that a town of Portishead's size has a cramped 'post office', especially as the building which used to 'house' the post office is used for parcel collections only. It might not be ideal, but it is better than what we have currently, where the staff have restricted space and customers have to queue amongst items sold by McColls. There are few times when you do not have to queue, and Christmas is horrendous.

Further, taking the post office out of the High Street is not the answer – how are the elderly and disabled supposed to get to, say, Sainsbury's?

A post office in a town like Portishead needs to be in the High Street.

One of the problems with getting a Tax Disc online is that it won't let you if your Tax Disc AND Insurance is due at the same time (because as far as the online database is concerned, your insurance is about to expire and there is no new insurance for the next year on record). This will be the case for people who have bought a car from new as you will tax and insure it at the same time every year if you buy your tax annually. This happened to me. So unless you pay for 6 months tax (more expensive) to enable buying your tax disc online, you have to go to the post office with your new insurance certificate (they don't update that you have new insurance online for a long time).

I suppose the point I was making about there being 3 was now it is just 1 post office doing the job of three. With no extra counters open. Even when there were 3, the Post office down the high street was always crammed full.

Personally, if I can do something onliine, book parcel pick-ups or tax a vehicle I will.

Couldn't the PO parcel depot be set up to receive parcels individually? That would certtainly ease the xmas crush!

Yes, a myriad of endless possibilities do seem to exist as to why these people were there.
But how many post offices we USED to have is actually irrelevant.  The fact is that some of the services that were once only dealt with by the post office can now be obtained elsewhere, and some services have been removed from the post office altogether, so logistically the need for as many counters isn't as great as it used to be.

The reason the problems exist, I believe, as I've previously mentioned, is people queueing unnecessarily (as is their right) which was obviously not taken into consideration during the great Labour Government post office cull.

Fortunately there are still times during the day when you can just walk into our one remaining post office and get served immediately. Unfortunately however, due to the constraints of the working day not everyone can present themselves during these quiet periods.

    Perhaps they only had cash?
Or maybe have been the victim of online fraud?
Or their pc may be in for repairs?
    Or their laptop got stolen?
Taxing the car for a neighbour?

If somebody needs to use the post office then they have the right to do so.

Portishead surely has enough people living in it to warrant at least 2 post-offices.

Until recently weren't there at least 3?

If the post office moves elsewhere, the disabled will simply park their cars up at another location instead of in the high street as they do now- but if it were to move into the proposed Sainsbury's, then all these cars would be left in the car park outside instead of being parked up in the high street causing problems that they do now.
I recently had to queue for a few minutes to use a service which is only available from the post office counter itself.  But both the people in front of me could have purchased their tax discs on-line either in the library using the free computer facilities or from the comfort of their own home if they had internet facilities (and a debit card). Perhaps some people just like to queue.
