The annual festival of fun and activities to celebrate Clevedon’s Marine Lake will be held on the weekend of September 17 to 19 and schools, businesses, clubs and organisations who want to join in are being invited to come forward.

It will be the sixth Marine Lake Festival and after last year’s success, when thousands flocked to have fun on the lake and enjoy activities, stalls and sideshows in the Salthouse Fields organisers plan that this year will be even bigger and better.

The Marine Lake was built in the 1930s as a major leisure facility for Clevedon and the annual festival is run by non-profit making organisation MARLENS for the local community.

MARLENS chairman Joe Norman said: “Once again we are planning a free festival with a schools day on the Friday and events for everyone throughout Saturday and Sunday.

“There will be some new features this year, including a flashback to the 1970s with a family It’s A Knockout tournament that will be fun for those taking part and even more fun for those watching. For the strong men and women there will be a “Truck Pull” on Saturday evening where a team or individual tows a 10-ton truck against the clock.

“We want to hear from local businesses who would like a stall in the Village Street, especially those who have something interesting or tasty to sell. This is a great chance to put your produce in front of the community.

“Sports clubs, charities and voluntary organisations can have a space free of charge – and we want to hear from anyone who would like to join in.”

The exciting events will be on the water where there will be sailing, canoeing and radio-controlled model boat events for all ages. This year will see the popular return of “walking on water” or “zorbing” - propel yourself across the surface of the lake in a giant plastic bubble.

Teams of four are being invited to take part in a novelty bath race. It will be an hilarious wet and wild race where teams navigate a plastic bathtub across the Lake.”

A spectacular firework display will light up the skies on Saturday evening (8:30-9pm depending on the weather), followed by music until 10pm.

Old favourites will occupy the Salthouse Fields including the climbing wall, music stage, art displays, agility dog show and vintage vehicles. The festival music will start on Friday evening with “music in the mar****dquo; and continue on Saturday and Sunday, finishing early evening on Sunday. A wide range of music is the target so any musicians who would like to take part should contact the organisers.

If you have a stall or attraction you want included at the event contact Matt Taylor on 01275 792049. Further details of the Marine Lake Festival can be found on www.marlens.org.uk.
