Avon and Somerset police held a conference to promote deaf awareness this week.
The conference is the latest in a series of events held by the constabulary, with their partner agencies and members of the public taking part in work aimed at improving services and understanding the needs of local community groups.
Previous conferences have included ones for older people, mental health and honour based abuse. Other seminars are planned that will look at faith, race and culture.
Organised by the constabulary's Diversity Unit, Deaf Awareness, One in Seven was held on police headquarters in Portishead on Tuesday.
The aim was to increase awareness of how being deaf or hard of hearing affects the delivery of policing services and explores how those services can be improved.
There were a number of presentations and workshops on a range of topics, including deaf culture and Police Link Officers for Deaf People (Plod).
Comments
Good idea, that will stop drivers honking their horns at people while driving sideways and carrying on with the general idea people can see and hear them. The background noise in a town street is usually enough to defy a direction of engine sound and the problems with identifying siren source on main roads confuses most people into the way of police and ambulance rather than out of it unless highly vigilant; fire engines are that little bit slower, so we rely on good driving ability of highly trained officers to avoid us.
