100 residents give cold shoulder to dockside ice cream trailer

Scores of angry residents have objected to plans to site an ice cream and drinks trailer on the dockside at Portishead Marina.
People living in Port Marine are up in arms at plans by developer Crest Nicholson to put a refreshments trailer on the piazza opposite the lock gates.
The trailer, which would sell ices and hot and cold drinks, would operate between 11am and 7pm seven days a week and be sited just metres away from residential properties.
A final decision on whether the trailer, which will be powered by a generator, can set up at the marina lies in the hands of North Somerset Council licensing committee.
More than 100 residents have already submitted letters of objection to the proposal which will be decided by North Somerset Council's licensing committee.
They say they are concerned that the outlet will cause more litter in the area and that the noise from the generator will disturb homeowners.
The marina is already well served by hot food and drink outlets with The Galley cafe near the lock gates, The Lockhouse restaurant, the Ocean Cafe in the boatyard and Me Me Chocolat and Jacks on the waterfront. Residents raised concerns with councillors at a meeting of Portishead Town Council and criticised local members for not bringing the matter to their attention.
It is understood that an ice cream vendor set up on the site last year but was moved on after complaints.
Objections to the proposal need to be submitted to North Somerset Council by March 12. A Crest Nicholson spokesman said: "This facility will bring additional employment opportunities to the area."

Don't forget the Big Wheel will be looking for a new home when it finishes at W-S-M. Real handy for checking out those top floor apartments.
This decision to put a trailer down at the piazza certainly flies in the face of the Crest Nicholson mission statement, and I quote from their Chief Executive Stephen Stone
"We aim to improve the quality of life for individuals and communities, both now and in the future, by providing better homes, work places, retail and leisure spaces"
Unless of course this is part of their drive to boost the retail side of things.
The next independent consultation Mr Stone receives detailing the residents views may not quite come back smelling of roses. I can't fathom out just how the residents quality of life is actually going to be improved by sticking a trailer and generator outside their homes. If I were amongst those 100 odd residents I would certainly be penning a letter this weekend asking for his and other board members thoughts on this issue.

ReportOnly a Crest Nicholson employee could possible quote "This will bring additional employment opportunities to the area".
Is that for real?
One trailer, one person, six months of the year, almost certainly someone from outside Portishead.
I think in reality the Crest Nicholson MD for Midland & South West will by now have carpetted the red-faced Product Director for this huge blunder. They are just about to try and sell 5-floor 4 bedroom town houses for prices way in excess of half a million pounds and they start to make the place look and smell like Singapore of the 1960s, with food trailers taking over the streets!
Their decision a couple of years ago to remove all the litter bins in that area because they didn't want to bother themselves with the rubbish looks a bit daft too.
What about a trailer selling pirated software and videos, and another selling cheap car parts - why, they could have a really good Car Boot Sale going by summer . . . .

ReportIf nothing else, It does seem a strange way for someone to show their appreciation. I wonder if they intend to thank future customers on other developments in a similar manner, Kebab anyone ?
