Delays expected as A38 roadworks start

Motorists in Portishead are being warned to allow extra time to their journeys when travelling to Bristol Airport as North Somerset Council carries out road improvements on the A38.

The latest road maintenance scheme will be carried out near the airport at Lulsgate Bottom and will see work to drainage and kerb repairs, resurfacing of the road and footpath and clearing verges.

Although the main road will stay open throughout the five-week programme, motorists are being warned to expect delays.

From February 13 to March 13, there will be two lanes open to traffic, which will changes as the work moves.

A speed limit of 30mph will also be put in place.

From March 14, the Downside Road and West Lane junctions will be closed and traffic limited to going along the main route following resurfacing.

In order to keep the main road open convoy working will be used, which incolces leading the traffic through designated lanes at a speed of 10mph.

North Somerset Council's deputy leader and executive member for highways, Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, said: "While the work is done there will be some unavoidable inconvenience but we are working to keep this to a minimum.

"Nevertheless, we are warning people to add a little extra time to their journeys, especially to the airport.

"I'm pleased we can continue our investment in the roads in North Somerset and this is an important scheme on one of our main routes, that links our region to Europe and beyond via the international airport."

The works, which will be carried out by Balfour Beatty on behald of the council, will cost around £190,000.
