As the person who prompted the Cabstand traffic light switch-off, I was dismayed just now to read thepickler's July post about a £3m revamp, involving new signals, at J19 on the M5. Can it be true that our public "servants", who by now should know better, are turning back the clock and sinking serious sums of public money into yet more systems of control? The Cabstand trial showed that self-control is more efficient than signal control, and at least as safe. To claim that the viability of give-and-take junctions is location-specific is debatable. Did they debate it? They certainly didn't ask me. Did they try it at J19, where there aren't even any pedestrians? Or in Weston? As I say in the before-after video of the Cabstand trial, to make Roads FiT for People, deregulation is not enough on its own. Other essential steps include a change in culture from priority to equality, and roadway redesign to express a social context. Instead of squandering good money on yet more unproductive control, shouldn't they invest at least some of it in sustainable FiT solutions? Videos and other info @ FiT Roads - Roads FiT for People.
