My personal view is that if they were open later one night a week, or on Sunday they would benefit as would residents. Historically I expect that traders would have said that they have tried it but no one uses them but since Costa opened the High St seems busy with people. Also, things don't happen overnight so you need to give things a chance, open for a period and let people know that you are there to serve them. Its no good saying 'use us or lose us' if you're not open when I am around to use you!
I think it would be a great idea to do a late night shopping scheme in Portishead. It would really attract more people to the town. I know it happens at Christmas, but why not other times of year? Traders complain business is slow, so why not look at doing something like this? Most people are at work in the day, so opening late would give them a chance to see what Portishead has to offer. What does everyone else think?

Great idea. With five children it's not always easy to get to the shops in the day. To be able to go out in the evenings and get stuff you need would be ideal. Especially in the run up to Christmas. Save me having to trek to Cribbs all the time. It would also help the traders in Portishead and encourage people to shop locally. A good idea when the town is coming out of a recession.
Maybe make it a Wednesday evening then, mid-week. People have plenty of access to shops at weekends. As an ex-shop owner I'd remind you that it's not necessarily as simple as unlocking a door, there's more to it, so I'd recommend someone walks around the shops and talks to the owners, and gets them to sign up, and gauge the interest.
I think that would be great. I drove through the high street last night at about 6pm and it was like a ghost town on the pavements. There were plenty of cars driving in and out of the town but no one on the streets although I think most of the shops were closed. I suppose the people heading out of the town could have been travelling to shops that were open. This is why I've asked the question would the town support a Cafe/Bar? Are we just a town that like to venture outside our borders for shopping and entertainment?
