Speed limits license speed at that limit. Would you want your child or mother to be hit by a bus doing 20? Is there any reason for insisting on 20mph at times when no-one is about? Far better to give responsibility to the individual for deciding appropriate speed based on context and the needs of the moment. When the street is busy, or someone is about to cross, you can slow to crawling pace. When no-one is around, you can speed up. It's a reasonable trade-off. Life involves countless variables. By definition, one size can't fit all. Most instructional signage is a sign of failure to devise a humane road culture and design roads in a way that stimulates sociable conduct. If we lived by equality rather than priority, people would stop insisting on anti-social rights-of-way and rediscover their humanity.
lets get the blokes with the red flags out again, it will keep the speeds down, congestion up, employment up, road rage up and as everything else seems to be on th up lets put the zebra crossings up on a mound, cars up on a mound every 20 metres and let everyone get up in arms about just about everything.
We have seen that people can be adukt and responsible, look at the cabstand experiement, leave us to it, we can and will act responsibly for the best part, we will act as adults when left to it, just leave us a lone and save some money rather tham make a load of signs and use more paint
