Town council chairman David Pasley is calling for a 20mph speed limit right along the High Street following the introduction of one at the Cabstand junction. What does everyone think?

Like the prebudget report today, it certainly doesn't go far enough to address some of the real problems.
The high street almost extends up to Gordano school gates on st. Mary's road, for additional safety why not extend it to encompass both the schools there along with the Brampton way playgroup and Portishead primary school.
From the clapton lane/clevedon road roundabout in the south, east along Bristol road until the junction with glebe road and then all the roads withing the Brampton way horseshoe.
Extend the existing 20 zone along station road down to Portishead primary school.
Other parts of Portishead town have a 20mph limit, why should the areas where the majority of young school children are regularly found walking and playing, remain a 30mph limit?

The continual rehashing of 20mph speed limit requests shows that people don't understand the real issue. Those who ignored the 30 limit will ignore 20 just the same. The real issue is Education of drivers to improve judgement and concentration and then the policing of those incapable of making those correct judgements.
One thing is VERY obvious opver the new system. Although I fully supported the switching off of the lights, my understanding is that a roundabout(s) would be created to establish some kind of priority. To simply display signs saying there is no priority is an invitation for recklessness in itself - quite simply, on occasions the more aggressive drivers will get through quickly. I have already had one very close escape - what is the local authority waiting for?
It occurs to me that having already been proven wrong by the ending of the lights they would love to see one or two (minor) collissions as a form of "told you so".
I would be amazed if anyone could drive at more than 20 MPH along the high street, unless it was during the night as there is always so much traffic in the high street. Maybe it would be better to ask the local police to stop people parking on the zig zags outside the post office, that is more lightly to cause an accident.

Hang on rotary123, isn't that exactly what the High Street is, a through road to Clevedon (and a through road from somewhere else)? Where in the Highway code does it say that a road from one place to another should be avoided just because it has shops on it? The road was build for transports, which today means cars. Thats the trouble with the M4, its spoilt by those selfish car drivers who think its just a through road to London!
