Last term a group of students at Gordano School got a chance to display their talents and create a lasting mural to raise cultural awareness at Gordano.
The creation of the wall mural was the culmination of a ‘Culture Competition’, which was run by the Student Leadership Team. The students had the idea after attending a conference run by North Somerset Find Your Talent, who provided the funding for the project.
The Student Team, led by Kristal Lau, promoted the competition in assemblies and through a poster campaign. The competition invited students to enter either a poem or a picture depicting what culture means to them and win the chance to create the mural.
The winners were chosen by Kristal and the team. The overall winner was Danielle Hodges from year 8, and her poem ‘What is Culture?’ was taken as inspiration for the mural. The students worked with a resident artist over three days to design and paint the artwork for the mural. All those involved enjoyed the experience and learned a lot. There have been many compliments on the students’ achievement since then. See it for yourself outside Portland House and DT!
