Fed up with slow broadband? Things could improve soon. It seems that BT are enabling more green street cabinets for their super fast broadband service between now and 31st March 2012. This means that many more homes in Portishead will be able to take advantage of the service. There are many street cabinets that are not included in the rollout because they are in areas that do not meet BT's financial criteria. To meet this criteria, BT require interest from more residents. Please check to see if you can get it now and if not, register your interest. The link to the website to use to check follows below. There is no obligation to order but you may find that the price of the super fast service is no more than your current BT package.

Please help (even if you're not interested in getting faster broadband) those of us in the northern and north eastern areas of The Village Quarter to get faster broadband by registering your interest.

On their site it looks like BT Infinity (fibre optic broadband) is now available in Portishead - sounds too good to be true!

Infinity is not available in all areas of Portishead - particularly those in the north and north eastern areas of the Village Quarter. Please register your interest at http://tinyurl.com/yengfbh

    Done.
Strange, yesterday it said Infinity was available at my postcode and today it's not.

Having moved from Burlington Rd where I did have BTInfinity, to the other side of the marina, where I don't I have been waiting and hoping for a further round of upgrades.

BS20ladz, how did you hear that more cabinets are being upgraded? BT's own info is limited, as once they enable part of the area they give no further info on how many or which cabinets are being upgraded.

At this stage, they've not said which cabinets will be enabled, its more a case of which cabinets haven't been. These are 10, 11, 15, 19, 20, 23, 28, 29, 31, 32, 33, and 34. I've tried to extract why not and all they say is that its a numbers game and the financial viability of enabling each cabinet is what comes first. Sadly for non-shareholding customers, it seems that they're more interested in numbers than in service. Information about which cabinets are being enabled is made available at the end of each quarter (next announcement at the end of March/early April) so keep an eye on the ADSL checker website http://tinyurl.com/6krav4v which claims that there are some cabinets that will be enabled by 31st March so again, keep an eye on it. Perhaps distribute some flyers in your vicinity and urge your neighbours to register their interest on the BT website.

Thanks, when I run the ADSL checker it gives no mention of FTTC or cabinets due for upgrade, so I guess its still not even being considered. :-(

My cabinet is near the junction between Pheonix Way and Newfoundland Way, and I can only hope that the ever increasing number of apartments being connected to it will eventually mean enough interest is generated to get it upgraded.

How can you find your nearest cabinet? I'm curious where mine is.

I think you have to do it the old fashioned way and go looking to see if you can spot one hanging out on a street corner nearby, I've not found anything online that maps the cabinets, only the exchanges.

That's right, but don't forget that the nearest cabinet might not be feeding your home. Opposite sides of streets can be fed from different cabinets. The houses opposite us can get Infinity but we can't :-( In the northern part of the Village Quarter, the ratio of cabinets (three cabinets - 30, 31, 32 and 34) to homes is higher and I think this is the reason why three of the cabinets have not been enabled (ie because it costs to enable each cabinet). Cab 30 (The Finches) seems to serve more homes so no wonder its been enabled. Also, three cabinets along the High Street have been enabled yet properties in this area would have already had the fastest broadband speeds as they are closest to the exchange which is off the High Street.

On the ADSL checker? That is BTInfinity then, 40Mbit download, 6.5Mbit upload, so your cabinet has already been updated. Lucky chap.

I'm not actually that keen to move. I only get 6.5 on ADSL2 (from O2), but am on a legacy unlimited and untraffic-managed tariff. Not sure switching to BT for £15 more and getting his with traffic management will be much better.

Cabinets are often marked 'BT' and the cabinet number is often prefixed with PCP.
