Necessary? Since when did any traffic system alterations need to be necessary?! Tinkering around the edges is apparently the way to go.

Well that's certainly true! Generally, I think roundabouts are a much better way of smoothly managing traffic than lights. Course, lately various local authorities seem to be in favour of roundabouts with traffic lights on as well!
