LOCAL people are being offered the chance to buy a share in a brand new low cost home on part of a major development in Portishead. A dozen one and two bedroom apartments are now available at Merchant Quay, Newfoundland Way, under a shared ownership scheme. Shared ownership is a Government initiative that offers people the opportunity to own their own home. People can purchase an initial share in a new home and pay a discounted rent on the rest. Then as their finances allow, further shares in the property can be bought. North Somerset Council negotiated the 12 affordable units at Merchant Quay as part of its commitment to providing low cost housing in the district. North Somerset Council executive member with responsibility for housing, Councillor Elfan Ap Rees, said the council worked extremely hard to ensure that every new development offered some affordable housing for local people. Mr Ap Rees said: "This is a great opportunity for residents to buy a share in a brand new apartment. "We would encourage people to come along to the open day and take a look at what is on offer." To showcase the apartments, an open event will be held at the development on January 28 from 10.30am – 2.30pm. The shared ownership scheme is being run by Sovereign Housing and more information is available by calling 0845 602 1618, emailing living@sovereign.org.uk or visiting www.sovereignliving.org.uk
