Portishead people raised nearly £20,000 for the Poppy Appeal.

The generous people of Portishead and Pill showed their support once more for the Royal British Legion's  Poppy Appeal this year raising £19,795 so far.

Organiser Sarah Long said: " I'm delighted with the amount raised, especially given the country's current economic position.

"We are very grateful to all the collectors and distributors as well as those who have donated their hard earned money to this worthy cause.

"More than £10,000 was raised by collectors at Waitrose, Co-op and Gordano Services, and £1,050 was raised in local schools, many of which had spent time educating the children about the meaning of Poppy Day.

"We are also grateful to Steve Fowler who lent his shop to the appeal during Remembrancetide, not only did this make the logistics easier for the organisers, but also raised an additional £1,130.

"The 2012 Poppy Appeal is about standing shoulder to shoulder with our brave Armed forces.

"The support  in Portishead was shown through the impressive turnout for the Remembrance Day parade, which went ahead despite the lack of a band.

"Daily we see and read of young servicemen and women employed in peace keeping in many parts of the world, often in considerable danger, and this means there will always be a need to provide help for them and their dependants.

"This is why it is so important that the Legion can continue with its vital work."

There will be a poppy collectors evening on Monday, February 18, at 8pm at Clarence House for all those who helped with this year collections.

Anyone interested in helping with the 2013 collections is asked to come along or contact Sarah Long on 01275 390970.

Sarah added: "It would only mean giving up two hours of your time for this worthy cause.

"We also require free standing shelves to help with the storage of poppies from year to year, so if you have any you are chucking out please let us know."
